Each feral cat will hunt and kill around 100 native wildlife in a year, even if well fed. These outdoor cats are a primary host to a disease that has caused death to manatees. At least 17 counties in Florida have feral cat colonies and one in Key Largo has an estimated 1k cats. Feral cats can kill 271 million small mammal and 68 million birds each year in Florida alone.

These omnivores will consume anything in their path, competing with native wildlife for resources and destroying crops and property. Wild hogs average 5 feet in length and 200 pounds. They were introduce to Florida in the 1500s by Spanish explorers Hernando DeSoto and Ponce de Leon and now inhabit all 67 counties.

Lionfish [Pterois volitans] are an invasive species to Florida and are having a negative impact on native species and reef habitat since they were spotted off the coast in 1985. They have a striped pattern of red, brown and white, grow to 15 inches, and have 18 venomous spines. Lionfish can consume prey more than half their own length and are the only species that blow water at prey causing the prey to turn toward them and get consumed.

Burmese pythons [Python molurus bivittatus] are nonvenomous constrictors that have become invasive species in the Everglades of Florida. Burmese pythons are one of the largest snakes in the world growing on average to 6-9 feet (but can reach 26 feet). They are often found near water as they are semi-aquatic, but they also make great tree climbers. Humans and alligators are the only predators to Burmese pythons, however these snakes impact the population of native mammals, birds and reptiles. Labeled as a conditional reptile, you can no longer have these pythons as pets.

While most green iguanas are indeed green, some adults can be orange and pink and average 5' in length. Green iguanas feed on vegetation as well as bird eggs and dead animals, but cause the most devastation by digging burrows that erode sidewalks, foundations, and seawalls. Iguanas were first reported in Florida in the 1960s and tend to stay in southern Florida as they are not cold hardy. So keep a look out when it gets too cold; they freeze and can fall out of trees and off roofs!

Cuban treefrogs [Osteopilus septentrionalis] are an invasive species that were first recorded in the 1920s in the Florida Keys via plant shipments and are now the largest species of treefrog in Florida. They spread around Florida via motorized vehicles and plant distribution. Cuban treefrogs have larger toepads and wartier skin than native treefrogs and average 1-4 inches. Cuban treefrogs are predators to native treefrogs, lizards, and various invertebrates.

You can only distinguish between the two bee species via lab testing.

Monk parakeets [myiopsitta monachus] are a nonnative species that cause power outages and fires with the creation of their nests in electrical equipment which is unique to their species. These nests have caused over $500k per year in damages! They are often recognized by their obnoxious squawk and while they are smaller than parrots in size, they have longer tails. They were introduce to Florida through pet trade.

Giant African land snails [Achatina fulica] are one of the most crop damaging snails in the world. A child brought 3 giant African land snails home from a trip to Hawaii in 1966 and once released, lead to over 18k snails being found in Florida in just 7 years! These snails are indeed giant at 8 inches in length and can travel up to 50 feet a night to eat. They can spread diseases to humans and damage veggies and plants.
